Remodel and renovate are two words that are often used interchangeably when it comes to interior design, contracting, and real estate. However, these terms actually mean different things. The main difference is that renovation is restoring a piece to a previous state and a remodel creates something new.
As you can see, the differences between renovate and remodel are fairly clear, but it might be tricky to tell the difference when it comes to home maintenance and real estate.
Renovation means to make something new again. Think of reviving an old piece of furniture. If you are repainting a damaged wall, it would be a renovation. If you are simply updating something in your home without really making a change, this is a renovation.
A remodel is when you create a new space. If you tear out all of your walls and create a new space, such as in your kitchen, this is a remodeling project.
When you do this you are not simply updating something old, you are creating an entirely new space. To the professionals who complete this type of work, these two words are very important.
