Natural stone countertops like marble, quartz and granite are very durable and add a luxurious feel to any kitchen or bathroom. To keep them in top condition for as long as possible, here are some tips on how to care for your stone countertops.
- Don’t stand on them – Kitchen countertops seem like a convenient ledge to sit or balance on in order to reach high cabinets or change a lightbulb, but excessive weight and pressure can cause tiny fissures in the stone to develop into cracks. Use a step ladder instead!
- Keep up with sealant – Some types of stone countertops need to be sealed, and since the sealant does not last forever, this means that over time (usually a few years) they’ll need to be resealed. The frequency depends on the type of stone, and the type of sealant you use. Follow manufacturer’s instructions and you’ll be all set.
- Use a cutting board – Even though most natural stone countertops are quite hygienic, you shouldn’t cut food or ingredients directly on them. Cutting boards will keep your natural stone countertop free from any scratches.
